What do I want for my students?

Today, I was speaking with an educator I respect and admire. I needed a dose of inspiration and reality! We disagreed about the need for teaching cursive to kids. I believe kids need to know how to read cursive, but don't want to "waste" a lot of instructional time teaching them to write it. She said, "But, Jody, kids LOVE cursive! They always want to learn to write in cursive!"

I've been spending (too much) time lately lamenting how my special group seems to not WANT to learn, so I responded to her comment: "Maybe I'll just be happy if I can teach them cursive and kindness!" And thus, this blog was born!

It will be a chronicle of my journey to get these kids to get excited about school again.
